Changes to the Feed-in Tariff

DECC’s application to appeal refused by the Supreme Court

The effect of the decision is that solar projects installed between 12 December  and 3 March will get the higher rate (43p/kWh for sub 4kW schemes) in place prior to the government cuts. It has no effect on projects since 3 March as new tariffs came into force at that time

Important Update for all Solar Electricity Customers!

From now until the 01 April 2012

All domestic Solar Electricity (PV) Installations (Feed-in Tariff registrations) from 3 March 2012 will be eligible for the higher FiT rate of 21p per kilowatt hour generation tariff and 3p per kilowatt hour export tariff in respect of systems up to 4kWp, applicable as of the 1st April 2012 as confirmed by The Department for Energy & Climate Change (DECC).

From the 01 April 2012 to 30 June 2012

All customers looking to install Solar Electricity will need to ensure their property has an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) to benefit from the Feed-in Tariff rate. Your property will need to have an energy efficiency rating of ‘D’ or above which may mean additional works could be required for your home such as loft and cavity wall insulation. Solar Electricity will count towards the EPC rating of your home and we can help determine additional requirements you might need.

From 1 July 2012 onwards

Installing Solar Electricity from the 1 July 2012 will mean that you will still require an EPC rating of ‘D’ and above for your property. The uptake of Solar PV throughout March and April 2012 will depend on what level the Feed-in Tariff subsidy is set at which could potentially be 13.6p – 16.5p, this is yet to be decided by DECC. The latest proposal by DECC (Consultation on Comprehensive Review Phase 2A: Solar PV Cost Control 09/02/12) details the introduction of a ‘degression mechanism’ which is to be based on an automatic baseline degression of 10% every 6 months.

For more information on this please visit the DECC website: http://www.decc.gov.uk/

Solar Electricity is still one of the best ways to reduce your electricity bills and generate an income. A solar electricity system could generate up to 50% of your home’s electricity requirements, and protect you against soaring energy prices for years to come. If energy prices rise by 5% per annum, you could save up to £10,000 on your electricity bills over the next 25 years (assuming you use only half of the electricity your panels generate).

What is an EPC?

Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) provides information on how to make your home more energy efficient and reduce the output of carbon emissions. All homes bought, sold or rented require an EPC.

Energy use and carbon emissions

EPCs carry ratings that compare the current energy efficiency and carbon emissions with potential figures that your home could achieve. Potential figures are calculated by estimating what the energy efficiency and carbon emissions would be if energy saving measures were put in place.

The rating measures the energy and carbon emission efficiency of your home using a grade from ‘A’ to ‘G’. An ‘A’ rating is the most efficient, while ‘G’ is the least efficient. The average efficiency grade to date is ´D´. All homes are measured using the same calculations, so you can compare the energy efficiency of different properties.
